California, massacre in Monterey Park: suspected killer committed suicide
The tragic Monterey Park shooting shocked the Californian city, where a man opened fire on innocent people, killing ten people and wounding others before taking his own life. The shooting occurred around 9:00 a.m. in a downtown park, where the victims were taking part in a Chinese New Year celebration.
Authorities said that after opening fire, the shooter targeted a second venue in the nearby city of Alhambra, also in the predominantly Asian-American Los Angeles area. There he was stopped and disarmed by brave customers, ‘heroes’ as the police chief called them.
Police identified the perpetrator of the shooting as a 72-year-old Asian man named Huu Can Tran: , who had mental health problems and a history of domestic violence. The motivations for his act have not yet been clarified, but according to initial investigations, there appears to be no connection to terrorist organizations or extremist groups.
He then fled in a white van and drove about 50 km before being stopped in Torrance, another community that is home to many Asian Americans, by special teams. The officers asked him to leave and then heard a gunshot. After about an hour, they smashed the windows of the van and found the killer’s lifeless body.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna added that the killer was carrying a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine, a second gun was discovered in the van where the man was found dead, and that there were no other ‘outstanding suspects’.
As for the motive, he stated that “all leads are open,” with hypotheses ranging from “domestic violence” to “hate crime.”
President Biden ordered flags at half-mast in all public buildings in the US.
The Monterey Park community is in shock at this tragic shooting, which claimed the lives of ten innocent people and left many injured. The police are working closely with the local authorities to investigate the incident and to offer support to the victims and their families.
This shooting represents a sad reality of the far too many shootings that occur in the United States and reminds us of the importance of taking measures to prevent gun violence. Furthermore, this tragedy highlights the importance of recognizing and treating mental health disorders, which can lead to violent behavior.
Local authorities have announced that there will be psychological support services for the victims, their families and the community affected by the tragedy. The City of Monterey Park joins in the grief of the victims’ families and is committed to working together to overcome this difficult time.
In this time of mourning, it is important that we support each other and continue to fight for a safer and more peaceful society.
