Fourth case of sexist violence in 24 hours, A woman was killed in Adeje, Tenerife
A 46-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Adeje (Tenerife) by her 44-year-old alleged ex-husband, who was arrested by the Guardia Civil, according to sources close to the investigation.
The Ministry of Equality confirmed this Monday the macho nature of the murder, as well as that of another woman in El Puerto de Santa María (Cadiz) on Sunday, January 8, while a third case in Ciudad Real continues to be investigated. In the last 24 hours, another woman was killed in Roquetas de Mar (Almería) by a man, although this is not being investigated as gender-based violence because the attacker was not in a romantic relationship with the victim.
With the confirmation of these two cases, the number of women killed by gender-based violence in Spain rises to two in 2023, according to official data, and to 1,184 since 2003, when data collection began. In contrast, the number of minors orphaned by gender-based violence in Spain rises to five in 2023, 382 since 2013.
The events in Adeje occurred between 11:30 p.m. and midnight this Sunday when the man stabbed his ex-wife twice with a knife in the house the victim shares with four minor children, two of them the couple’s children, and located near the Armeñime neighborhood. The minors were taken in by the Canary Islands Government Social Services.
According to EFE, the man also caused minor injuries to one of the victim’s children when he tried to defend her. Two of the children are toddlers and others are teenagers, as confirmed by the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, after the minute’s silence that was observed in the rejection of this death that, according to the mayor, everything seems to indicate that it could It is a murder by sexist violence.
Neighbors alerted the Guardia Civil, which showed up at the facility, and was able to immediately arrest the alleged assailant for the crime of murdering his ex-partner. It was a neighbor who managed to subdue the attacker and detain him until the arrival of the Local Police.
There are no complaints but the man had been arrested days earlier for threats
Rodríguez Fraga commented that the woman was a user of municipal social services in the emergency field, but there were no reports of sexist violence. This was a complex situation, said the mayor, who insisted that the major concern of municipal services was the care of the four minors.
The detained man had been arrested on Dec. 28 for coercion of the victim , but she would not testify before the investigating court handling the case, and the judge dismissed it after releasing the arrested man.
This was told to Efe by police sources, who pointed out that the court did not impose any protection order or any precautionary measures . When a case is filed, the sources added, the risk assessment in the VioGén system usually goes from top to bottom, but the police officer in charge of that assessment decided to leave it at medium risk of particular significance, which involves direct agent contact with the victim.
Both the victim and his alleged attacker are originally from Morocco, although it is not known at this time how long they had been on Spanish soil. The mayor of Adeje recalled that in this municipality in southern Tenerife many nationalities coexist without problems and pointed out that something is wrong when four women die on the same day due to sexist violence.
